G20 meeting in Srinagar, leap towards narrative correction in Kashmir

Srinagar:The G20 meeting in Srinagar which begins today presents a golden opportunity to transform the political landscape and revitalize the collective mindset of the region. According to a report by the International Centre for Peace Studies, Kashmir has long suffered from a negative and insular political culture tainted by secessionism and violence. However, the desire for change has taken root among the valley’s residents, who are now actively engaging with their surroundings in search of practical solutions. The G20 meeting is expected to fuel this spirit of self-reflection and course correction.

The International Centre for Peace Studies points out that the region has been plagued by divisions since the emergence of secessionist movements. Those at the forefront of these movements have exploited these divisions, leaving little room for alternative perspectives. The discourse surrounding Kashmir has been carefully manipulated, perpetuating conflict-oriented narratives and stifling diverse opinions. However, since 2019, a new narrative centered on engagement has gained momentum, with a wide range of stakeholders demanding their place in the dialogue. Against this backdrop, the upcoming G20 working conference in Srinagar assumes even greater significance, offering a scholarly inquiry into the broader context of Kashmir.

It is essential to emphasize that the aim here is not to undermine or dismiss legitimate political grievances expressed by various parties. Instead, the focus is on critically examining the potential of “engagement” as a means to unearth solutions to the overarching issues at hand and explore the possible outcomes.

With India currently holding the chairmanship of the G20, an organization comprising wealthy global economies, the organizing committee has taken on the responsibility of allocating time and opportunities across selected regions within the country. The primary objective is to showcase India’s inherent diversity, encompassing both geographical and cultural aspects, as highlighted in a report by the International Centre for Peace Studies.

Moreover, the G20 meeting provides a platform to underscore India’s commitment to economic opportunities and the promotion of ecotourism. Notably, the focus is on engaging the country’s burgeoning youth population, who have historically been deprived of such opportunities due to various factors.

Srinagar, located in the picturesque Kashmir region, emerges as a compelling choice to exemplify India’s diversity. Renowned as one of South Asia’s premier tourist destinations, Kashmir offers an ideal backdrop for the G20 working summit, with a strong emphasis on bolstering the tourism sector. Recent months have witnessed a significant surge in investment in the Kashmir valley, epitomized by the construction of a commercial tower in the city center by the renowned business organization, Emaar, from the United Arab Emirates. This development not only generates employment opportunities for local youth but also showcases the administration’s unwavering dedication to fostering growth.

However, prior to the repeal of Article 370, the state of Jammu and Kashmir, now a Union Territory, faced frequent disruptions amid national, bilateral, and international engagements. Previous peace processes failed to yield substantial results. Adding to the challenges, secessionist elements supported by Pakistan have made persistent attempts to disrupt the upcoming G20 summit.

Over the past two weeks, armed men, acting on orders from across the border, have posed a grave threat to regional peace in Poonch, Jammu division. The recent terrorist attack in Poonch claimed the lives of five troops, with one terrorist neutralized and others still at large. Security personnel have apprehended local sympathizers as well. The People’s Anti-Fascist Front (PAFF), an evolved faction of Lashkar-e-Taiba, has issued open threats, specifically targeting the G20 meeting. The group contends that the event aims to portray Kashmir as a normal territory, contradicting their view that the region should be recognized as disputed, thereby challenging India’s stance.

Nevertheless, amidst these challenges, the G20 meeting in Srinagar is expected to invigorate the spirit of correction and progress. Best wishes pour in from the International Centre for Peace Studies, as Kashmir and its people embark on this momentous journey toward a brighter future.
