2 Infiltrators Killed Along LoC In Poonch, Gunfight In Surankote

Poonch: Army on Monday claimed to have killed two unidentified Infiltrators in Poonch sector.

Officials told GNS that major Infiltration bid was eliminated in a joint operation by Indian Army and J&K Police during the night of 17 Jul 23 in Poonch Sector.

The officials said that two infiltrators have been eliminated. Search operations are in progress.(GNS)

Later in a statement, a defence spokesperson said while the body of one militant was recovered from the site, the second ultra fell into the Poonch river after being injured.

He said the operation was launched after the alert troops noticed suspicious movement from across the LoC towards the Indian side near the Poonch River.

Army and J&K Police personnel set up anti-infiltration posture in multiple tiers to prevent any militant from entering or escaping, he said.

The exchange of fire began in the early hours and the two militants were hit. “One of the militants fell on the spot while the other militant was observed falling in the Poonch river,” he said.

He said efforts are underway to trace the body of the militant who fell in the river.

Major war like stores including one AK-74 rifle with magazine, 11 rounds and other items for sustenance were recovered, he added.

Meanwhile, a gunfight between militants and joint team of army and police erupted in Surankote area of Poonch on Monday, officials said.

They told GNS that based on specific intelligence input, a joint Cordon and Search Operation was launched in Sindarah and Maidana near Surankote Poonch by troops of Indian Army and SOG of Police. “Contact established. Intense firefight ongoing, area cordoned, operations in progress,” army confirmed in a tweet. (GNS)
