Srinagar: Two policemen were killed in a militant attack in north Kashmir’s Bandipora district on Friday.
A police spokesperson told GNS that militants fired upon a police party near Gulshan Chowk area of thje district at about 1715 hours.
He said that two police personnel Mohammad Sultan (SgCt) and constable Fayaz Ahmad received critical gunshot injuries. Both were shifted to nearby hospital where both of them succumbed to their injuries.
“Police has registered a case in this regard under relevant sections of law. Investigation is in progress and officers continue to work to establish the circumstances which lead to this incident,” he said. Area has been cordoned off and search in the area is going on, the spokesman added.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Snha condemned the attack and announced that J&K administration will extend all possible support to their families.
“No words are strong enough to condemn the heinous (militant) attack on our brave JK Police jawans SgCT Mohd Sultan & Ct Fayaz Ahmad at Bandipora. I convey my heartfelt condolences to (their) families,” he said, “adding, “We are firmly resolved to avenge this barbaric action by the enemies of peace & determined to completely dismantle the (militant) ecosystem. J&K administration will extend all possible support to (the) families.”
Former Chief Minister and National Conference vice president Omar Abdullah also condemned the attack.
“I condemn the militant attack on the police in Bandipore area of North Kashmir earlier today that resulted in the death in the line of duty of J&K police personnel Muhammad Sultan and Fayaz Ahmad. May Allah grant them Jannat & may their families find strength at this time,” Omar wrote on twitter. (GNS)
