Srinagar: An Assistant Sub-inspector of Police and a civilian were shot dead by militants at Bijbhera Anantnag and Eidgah Srinagar on Wednesday, officials said.
A police spokesman told GNS that at about 6:10 p.m., unidentified militants fired upon ASI Mohammad Ashraf son of Ghulam Mohammad Dar of Awantipora near Police Station Bijbehara, Anantnag. In this incident, he received gunshot injuries and was immediately shifted to hospital for the treatment, the spokesman said. However he succumbed to his injuries.
Earlier at around 5:25 p.m., a civilian was shot dead by the gunmen at Merjanpora Eidgah area, falling with the jurisdiction of police station Safakadal Srinagar.
“Unidentified (militants) fired upon a civilian identified as Rouf Ahmad Khan son of Mohammad Shafi Khan resident of Merjanpora Safakadal near his house. He received grievous gunshot injuries in this incident and was immediately evacuated to nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries,” he said, adding, “Police have registered cases regarding both the incidents.”
He said investigation was in progress and officers continue to work to establish the full circumstances leading to these incidents. “The respective areas have been cordoned and search in these areas is going on,” the spokesman added.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha said that he was deeply saddened by the “barbaric and cowardly” militant acts in Srinagar and Anantnag. “I strongly condemn this heinous attack on civilian Rouf Ahmad & JKP officer Mohd Ashraf. The (militants) and their handlers responsible for these killings will be brought to justice soon,” he said in a tweet.
