Kashmir now breathing in free environment: LG Sinha

Says era of bandh calls, violence thing of past

Srinagar: On the verge of commemorating the 4th anniversary of the momentous abrogation of Article 370 and 35A in Jammu and Kashmir, Lt. Governor Manoj Sinha addressed the monumental significance of this transformative decision in an exclusive interview with Doordarshan News.

In this candid ‘Khaas Mulakat’ with DD News anchor Ramaa Tyaagi, Lt. Governor Manoj Sinha wholeheartedly praised the visionary leadership of PM Narendra Modi for his unwavering commitment to executing this historic reform.

Asserting that the removal of Articles 370 and 35A through parliamentary procedures marked an unprecedented turning point in the region’s history, Sinha emphasized the far-reaching impact of this milestone.

Sinha declared that the era of Bandh calls, once initiated by terrorists, separatists, and neighbouring countries before the abrogation, now belonged to the annals of history. He proudly highlighted the array of benefits stemming from the scrapping of these outdated provisions, such as the proliferation of educational institutions, medical colleges, IIT, IIM, NIFT, highway projects, and other infrastructure developments.

Gone are the days when people were constrained to return home before dusk, as Sinha proclaimed that now, open markets thrive until late at night, with the youth revelling in musical programs by the scenic banks of the Jehlum River.

The Lt. Governor underscored that peace cannot be bought but can be fostered through a conducive and transparent environment. He praised the government’s people-oriented approach, which has successfully restored the trust of the populace.

Reflecting on the burgeoning tourism industry, Sinha revealed that last year alone, 1.28 crore tourists visited Kashmir, bolstering the region’s economy, with expectations of the figure rising to two crore in the coming year.

Sinha proudly proclaimed that Jammu and Kashmir now stand on par with other states in terms of transparency, boasting an impressive array of 450 online services, solidifying its position as a pioneer in e-services across the country.

Discussing the successful G20 meeting hosted in Srinagar, Sinha rejoiced over the resplendent beauty of the valley and the overwhelming joy expressed by 99% of its people. Following the event, numerous countries lifted bans on their citizens visiting the region.

Sinha emphasized that the region’s developmental and infrastructural decisions are now being made collectively by 35,000 elected representatives, a stark contrast to the past, where such decisions were limited to a select few families. The Lt. Governor cited an overwhelming 90% positive feedback from public circles.

Addressing land acquisition policies, Sinha clarified that only individuals with domicile are permitted to buy agricultural land, while government-provided land is welcomed by the public for industrial, hospital, hotel, and medical college purposes.

Sinha hailed the Industrial Policy of Jammu and Kashmir, boasting maximum incentives and projecting a potential investment of 75 thousand crores, aimed at combating unemployment and fostering economic growth.

Recognizing the significance of GI tagging, Sinha highlighted its role in protecting indigenous knowledge and enabling niche market product sustenance for specific geographical areas.

The Lt. Governor announced the forthcoming launch of a dedicated portal, Mission Youth, in collaboration with Vision India, aimed at connecting the youth of J&K with various industries, facilitating better outcomes for young entrepreneurs.

Addressing concerns about developmental decisions being politically motivated, Sinha highlighted the allocation of five Marla’s land to landless families under the Prime Minister’s Awas Yojna scheme, with plans to provide homes for approximately two lac homeless families in the Union Territory.

Expressing deep regard for the Kashmiri Pandits, Sinha emphasized ongoing housing colony construction under the Prime Minister’s development package (PMDP).

Taking a firm stand against drug addiction, the Lt. Governor introduced the Nasha Mukh Bharat initiative, including Nasha Mukh Panchayats, aimed at liberating every village from drug-related challenges.

Appreciating Kashmir’s cinematic allure, Sinha shared the formulation of a comprehensive film policy and the production of 400 movies in the region over the past three years.

Regarding administrative discipline, Sinha referenced Section 3112 (C) as a legal tool to take action against officials involved in anti-national activities, highlighting the suspension of elected individuals under this provision.

Addressing the eagerly awaited elections, Sinha emphasized that the Election Commission of India determines the date, while the region awaits the completion of delimitation. He reminded the public of the Home Minister’s assurance that statehood would be restored in Jammu and Kashmir post-delimitation and elections.

Lastly, Sinha extolled the cultural significance of the Amarnath Yatra, not just as a religious practice but as a reflection of Kashmir’s rich culture and hospitality.
