Srinagar: In the picturesque valley of Kashmir, where uncertainty and violence once reigned, a new era of peace and progress has taken root. After the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019, the region has witnessed a remarkable transformation, drawing tourists in unprecedented numbers. With a surge in visitors, the local economy is thriving, and hopes for a better future are on the rise.
The administration of Jammu and Kashmir, under the leadership of Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, has made tremendous efforts to ensure a peaceful environment in the region. These efforts have borne fruit as the once-elusive tranquility has become a reality, allowing businesses to flourish and educational institutions to function without disruption.
Reflecting on the remarkable change, a shikara owner from the Dal Lake, Abdul Qadir, said, “In the past, we lived in constant fear and uncertainty. Tourists were usually hesitant to visit, and our livelihoods suffered. However, since the region has embraced peace, tourists have flocked to Kashmir, bringing prosperity back to our lives.”
The surge in tourist numbers has been remarkable, with official figures indicating that 1.27 Crore (12.7 million) tourists have visited the Union Territory. Experts believe that this number is expected to surpass the previous year’s record, signaling the newfound confidence in the region as a safe and desirable destination.
“Peace is the foundation for any development to take place. Without peace, progress remains a distant dream,” emphasized an official of the administration. “The administration has worked tirelessly to foster an environment conducive to growth and prosperity. Today, we are witnessing the results of those efforts as tourists from all corners of the world are coming to explore the natural beauty of Kashmir.”
In the past, strikes and violence often marred the daily life of Kashmiris and deterred tourists from visiting the valley. However, with the administration’s sustained and guided efforts, these dark chapters seem to have been left behind.
“The progress we have seen in the last few years is truly remarkable,” stated Mr. Qumail Rashid, a hotel owner. “Earlier, we would be constantly worried about cancellations and the safety of our guests. Now, we welcome visitors with open arms, and they leave with a positive impression of our hospitality and the region’s beauty.”
The surge in tourist footfall has spurred the administration to prioritize the improvement of infrastructure to accommodate the growing numbers. Road networks have been upgraded, and modern amenities have been introduced to ensure a comfortable stay for tourists.
“While it is gratifying to see the increase in tourists, we are aware that our work is not done,” an official said. “We continue to focus on enhancing infrastructure to cater to the growing influx of visitors while preserving the natural beauty of Kashmir.”
The positive impact of tourism on the local economy has been significant. Javaid Ahmad, a common auto-rickshaw owner, shared, “With more tourists, our business has grown exponentially. We have seen an improvement in our earnings, and it gives us hope for a better future for our families.”
As the region embraces peace and prosperity, the people of Kashmir are hopeful that this transformation will pave the way for a brighter tomorrow.
“Tourism has breathed new life into our valley,” said Mehjabeen, a local entrepreneur. “We now have the opportunity to interact with people from different cultures and learn from them. I believe that our future is now filled with possibilities.”
With the Jammu and Kashmir administration’s persistent efforts and the valley’s natural allure, it is clear that Kashmir is on the path to progress and development. As more tourists are drawn to its enchanting landscapes, the region is poised to witness greater economic growth and, more importantly, a future that is defined by peace and prosperity.
