Army deploys 8,500 troops, advanced tech for secure yatra

Srinagar: The Indian Army has launched “Operation SHIVA 2025” in coordination with the civil administration and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) to ensure the secure and smooth conduct of the annual Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra, which remains under heightened threat from Pakistan-backed terror proxies following Operation Sindoor.

An Army spokesperson said the high-tempo operation involves the deployment of over 8,500 troops along both the Northern and Southern Yatra routes, backed by advanced surveillance technology and logistical support.

A robust counter-terror grid, anti-drone systems, and disaster response infrastructure have been activated to safeguard the pilgrimage, he said.

“More than 50 Counter-Unmanned Aerial Systems (C-UAS) and electronic warfare units have been deployed to neutralize drone threats, along with continuous UAV surveillance and real-time monitoring of the Yatra routes and the Holy Cave. Engineer task forces have been mobilized for track widening, bridge construction, and landslide mitigation,” spokesperson said.

The Army has also stationed over 150 doctors and medical personnel along the route, supported by two Advance Dressing Stations, nine Medical Aid Posts, a 100-bed hospital, and 26 oxygen booths with over two lakh litres of oxygen, the spokesperson added.

Additional infrastructure includes quick reaction teams, bomb disposal squads, water supply points, and emergency rations for 25,000 pilgrims. Signal companies and EME units have been deployed to maintain seamless communications and technical support. Indian Army helicopters remain on standby for emergency evacuations or contingencies, statement also reads.

To enhance situational awareness, the Army is using live tracking of Yatra convoys from Jammu to the cave shrine through high-resolution PTZ cameras and drone feeds. “Real-time updates help us pre-empt threats and coordinate responses across agencies,” said a senior Army official.

Operation SHIVA 2025, according to the Army, underscores its commitment to ensuring a safe, uninterrupted, and spiritually enriching pilgrimage for all devotees.
