Reopening Tourist Spots – A Welcome Move

The decision by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to reopen 16 tourist destinations is a much-needed and commendable step towards restoring normalcy and boosting the UT’s tourism sector. The temporary closure of these spots following the tragic Pahalgam terror attack on April 22 was a necessary precaution, but prolonged restrictions would have further dented the livelihoods of thousands dependent on tourism. The phased reopening, beginning June 17, sends a strong message that Kashmir is ready to welcome visitors with renewed confidence and enhanced security. Tourism is the backbone of J&K’s economy, providing employment to hoteliers, travel operators, ponywalas, artisans, and countless others. The LG’s engagement with stakeholders, including legislators, tour operators, and local business associations, reflects an inclusive approach to decision-making. His assurance that other restricted spots will reopen after security evaluations is also reassuring, as it balances public safety with economic revival.

Equally significant is the emphasis on the upcoming Amarnath Yatra, which holds immense religious and economic importance. The LG rightly called it a “people’s Yatra,” urging locals to contribute to its success. The administration’s efforts in upgrading infrastructure, better roads, telecom connectivity, and accommodation demonstrate preparedness. However, the real test lies in seamless execution, particularly in security and disaster management, as seen during the LG’s inspection of the Nunwan Base Camp. While challenges remain, this move marks a positive shift. For lasting impact, the administration must continue proactive confidence-building measures, ensuring foolproof security, promoting Kashmir’s pristine beauty globally, and addressing stakeholders’ concerns. This move can rekindle tourist inflow, revive businesses, and reinforce peace. The world is watching, let Kashmir UT shine again as a paradise for travelers.
